When you’re in the store buying groceries, you might purchase food that’s wrapped in plastic. This pbl plastic makes our food stay fresh and clean, but it can also do some not-so-good stuff to the planet, we’re learning about the good and not-such-good things about food and plastic, and some ways we can help to produce less rubbish and come up with better ways to wrap our food.
But plastic can also cause trouble. When we toss plastic wrappers, they can go to the landfill or the ocean. This can be bad if animals and plants that live there can’t handle the water. Because plastic can take an incredibly long time to break down, it can also remain in the environment for many years.
Some folks fear that plastic might not be so good for our health. When you leave food wrapped in plastic, it might leach chemicals from the plastic into the food. Some of these chemicals can be bad for us if we eat them; others can be bad for us on our skin or in the air. This is why it’s a good idea to do your best to reduce the number of plastic-wrapped foods you buy and eat.
One way we can help ourselves is by using reusable bags when we shop at the store, which helps reduce wrapping plastic waste from food. Instead of plastic bags for our fruits and vegetables, we can bring our own cloth bags or baskets. We can also do our best to buy food that isn’t wrapped in plastic. We can also search for fruits and vegetables sold at a few stores that no longer come packaged in plastic.
Purchasing food in bulk is another method to help cut down plastic waste. How can we generate less plastic when we buy things like rice, pasta and snacks in big containers rather than single portions? We might also look for things — vinegar, say — that are in glass jars or packages made of paper instead of plastic.
Food plastic, wrapped in plastic, can have an outsized impact on the environment. We're not always going to toss our plastic packaging wrappers in the places that they should end up in. This can be bad for animals and plants that live in the habitat. Plastic can deteriorate into small particles called microplastics that can be dangerous for the environment.
Recycling plastic wrappers is one way that we can help mitigate the environmental consequences of plastic-wrapped food. In some places, they have programs that recycle plastic so it can be made into new things. We can cut down the amount of new plastic that’s produced by recycling the wrappers.
